Global Civic Engagement 2017 Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata
About the Program
GGC Global Civic Engagement seeks to enhance internationalization of the educational experiences of the students through global awareness, social impact, and creation of cultural competence by instilling a broader would perspective through global participation and civic engagement.
The 2017 spring break program is designed to examine the concept of service learning as it relates to issues of social justice in a global context. Through hands on learning experiences with international communities and interactive reflection, programs participants will critically examine the societal impact of service around the world.
This program will take place in Santo Domingo and Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Itinerary may include visits to:
Colonial City of Santo Domingo
Cathedral of Santo Domingo
Alcazar of Columbus
Peace Corps Dominican Republic Central Office
Dominican Amber Museum
San Felipe Fort
Isabel de Torres Mountains
Dates & Duration
This program goes to the Dominican Republic for one week during Spring Break for service-learning projects.
Start: Saturday, March 4th
Ends: Sunday, March 11th

Day 1: Arrive in Santo Domingo. Cultural briefing.
Day 2: Insights into the cultural and historical makeup of the island. Tour of Santo Domingo
Day 3: Peace Corps Visit.
Day 4: Leave Santo Domingo to Puerto Plata. Day of service.
Day 5: Day of service, Puerto Plata city tour.
Day 6: Day of service, free time.
Day 7: Day of service, visit to Damajagua Falls.
Day 8: Fly back to Atlanta.
Potential projects during the days of service:
Helping conduct a street census of youth working in the streets in Puerto Plata
Eco-construction projects such as building clay ovens or eco-compost toilets
Planning supplemental educational activities for the school, such as arts, music, physical fitness, environmental or science activities
Organizing medical clinics and first aid trainings in the community
doing recycling activities and education about pollution
Teaching new crafts to our local artisans
Cost & Payment
Program cost: $1700
Once you commit to attending the program, there is a $200 NON-REFUNDABLE deposit. The deposit of $200 is due by November 15th. **Please make note all payments are non-refundable upon receipt unless GGC cancels the study abroad program.
